Post-war elections in Ukraine: lobbyists propose changes to criminal law and mechanisms for protecting voting rights

Ukraine continues to work on preparing legislative proposals for organizing and holding elections in the context of a special period and post-war reconstruction.

The Ukrainian National Lobbyists Association participates in the work of the expert group that develops recommendations for the formation of a new legal model of the electoral process.

During a regular meeting of the working group, the key challenges of holding elections in the postwar period and possible legislative solutions to ensure their security and legitimacy were discussed.

Legislative proposals of lobbyists

As part of the group’s work, UNLA representatives proposed a number of amendments to the current legislation.

In particular, we are talking about:

  • Amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine to take into account the risks associated with holding elections in the wartime and post-war period;
  • strengthening the protection of the State Voter Register;
  • establishing effective mechanisms for appealing decisions of election commissions, including those operating abroad.
Representatives of the NALU in the working group on the preparation of post-war elections proposed amendments to the Criminal Code, strengthening the protection of the State Voter Register and mechanisms for appealing decisions of foreign election commissions.

The panelists paid special attention to ensuring the voting rights of Ukrainian citizens who are outside the country.

Work on the future law

According to Oleksiy Shevchuk, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian National Lobbyists Association, the work continues in cooperation with various institutions and experts.

The purpose of this paper is to prepare comprehensive recommendations for future legislation on elections in wartime and post-war periods.

The members of the working group agreed to continue their work in the format of specialized subgroups that will prepare specific proposals for legislation.

It is expected that the results of this work will become the basis for the formation of a new legal architecture of the electoral process in Ukraine after the end of the war.
