The National Bar Association of Ukraine continues to work on draft professional standards for “Attorney” and “Legal Assistant.” Oleksiy Shevchuk, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian National Lobbyists Association, is involved in this work.

During the regular meeting of the working groups, participants agreed on the next steps in preparing both drafts, reviewed procedural and methodological issues, and made organizational decisions. Specifically, they appointed the chairs, secretaries, and methodologists for the working groups and assigned tasks for the further development of the documents.

Future standards are intended to define the key job functions, knowledge, skills, and professional competencies required to practice law and work as a legal assistant. The preparatory phase is currently coming to a close, and work is beginning on drafting the framework provisions for these documents.

The work is structured around two distinct areas: the development of the “Attorney” standard and the “Legal Assistant” standard. This approach makes it possible to take into account the specific tasks and responsibilities of each professional role.

Special attention was paid to the representation of various professional communities. Practicing attorneys, labor union representatives, scholars from the Law Institute of the Vadym Hetman Kyiv National Economic University, as well as Ukrainian attorneys practicing abroad, were involved in the development of this document. This allows for the integration of practical experience, scholarly approaches, and an international perspective.

The participation of Oleksiy Shevchuk, Chairman of the UNLA Board, in this work represents the Association’s contribution to the professional dialogue on the development of the legal sector, professional competencies, quality, and accountability.

The next steps involve summarizing the experts’ recommendations and further refining the drafts in collaboration with the professional community. The main objective is to develop substantive and practical standards that will take into account the actual needs of the profession and contribute to its development.
